Graduate Admission Requirements

Read the information below to learn about our Graduate and Certificate admission requirements. Admission timelines and application procedures are the same for both programs.
  • SEPTEMBER 1: CMU School of Music Acceptd application opens.
  • DECEMBER 1: Acceptd application closes. All music application materials due. 
    • Priority deadline #1 for Advanced Music Studies Certificates (AMSC) that require pre-screens, and to be considered for financial aid.
  • EARLY JANUARY: Letters of recommendation, final English Proficiency test scores, and outstanding unofficial transcripts due January 5. Pre-screening decisions and interview requests released.
  • LATE JANUARY - FEBRUARY: Audition Days.
  • MARCH 1: Priority deadline #2 for Advanced Music Studies Certificates (AMSC) to be considered for financial aid.
  • MARCH 15: Graduate and priority AMSC decision letters released. 
  • APRIL 15: Graduate and AMSC student decision deadline.
  • MAY 1: Final AMSC application deadline, financial aid not guaranteed. 
  • Review and follow the Audition/Portfolio Requirements for your specific program
    • Pre-screening recordings: Flute, Piano, Tuba, Violin, Voice
    • Portfolio materials: Composition, Music Education, Music & Technology
  • Complete the School of Music Acceptd Application, which includes the following:
    • $130 USD application fee.
    • Music Resume/CV; Optional professional resume to be considered for assistantships.
    • Repertoire List
    • Personal Statement of 650 words. Please describe 1) your musical training, 2) reasons for applying to the CMU School of Music, and 3) the music and academic goals you wish to accomplish at Carnegie Mellon University.
    • Pre-screen recordings and/or portfolio materials where applicable.
    • Select an audition date. Students who are invited after pre-screenings will be assigned to the audition date selected.
    • Unofficial transcripts* from U.S. institutions attended. Desired GPA 3.0 out of 4.0.
    • Provide an unofficial course-by-course academic credential evaluation* for foreign institutions. We accept credential evaluations only from WES, ECE, or SpanTran. Desired GPA 3.0 out of 4.0.
*Official transcripts and/or credential evaluations will be required if you are admitted and choose to enroll in the School of Music. 

TEST SCORE INFO: 

  • Students whose native language is not English must submit an official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo score. The best overall test will be used for application review. Unofficial scores should be uploaded to the media section of the Acceptd application. 
  • Music & Technology (MS) applicants may submit an official GRE score.* Institution Code 2074; Department Arts - Performance and Studio – Music 2404

*The School of Music is GRE test-optional for the current admissions cycle.
